How this calculator works
This tool converts your car's efficiency into litres needed for the journey, then multiplies by the current fuel price. UK fuel is priced in pence per litre, so enter the price shown at the pump (for example, 145 for 145.0p). If you only know your MPG in US gallons, note that UK MPG uses imperial gallons (4.54609 litres), which is what this calculator assumes.
- How do I calculate fuel cost for a journey?
- Divide your journey distance by your car's MPG to get gallons needed, convert to litres, then multiply by the price per litre.
- What if I don't know my car's MPG?
- Check your car's handbook, the manufacturer's website, or your dashboard's average MPG reading. A typical UK petrol car does 40-50 MPG; diesel cars often do 50-65 MPG.
- Does this include tolls or parking?
- No — this calculates fuel only. Add tolls, parking, or congestion charges separately for a full journey cost.
